Isaiah Rashad, a young upcoming rapper from Tennessee, discovered and signed to TDE(Top Dawg Entertainment, the Record label Kendrick, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy and Jay Rock belong to), has caught eyes around the hip hop scene. He first hit the hip hop scene at TDE’s BET Cypher, where he dropped bars with the rest of TDE’s rapper cast. Since then, he has released his debut album Cilvia Demo which got a little bit of buzz in the hip hop world. His debut EP peaked at 40 on the billboard 200, and went as high as 6 on the billboard top rap albums. I personally am interested in his follow-ups to Cilvia Demo, as his flow and style seems yet to mature. This kid should definitely be on everyone in the hip hop game’s watch list though.
SZA(Pronounced Sizza), an aspiring singer/songwriter from St. Louis, Missouri who is also signed to TDE. Unlike Isaiah Rashad, SZA gathered some momentum in the music world prior to her signing. She released two EPs prior to signing: See.SZA.Run and S, which led to her signing and release of Z, her first retail project. Z peaked at 39 on the billboard 200 and peaked at 9 on the US hip hop/RnB charts. She was also present at the TDE cypher, but didn’t perform. I think SZA is one of the most unique artists to come out in recent years, especially in a dying age of RnB. She mixes trance and RnB nicely into a very euphoric and hypnotic sound. Her voice and lyrics mimic this style, it’s really indescribable and something everyone must give a chance. I don’t think she’ll ever really ‘blow up’ because it’s been said that she doesn’t like the limelight, but she’s definitely going to get some attention if she keeps this up.
